Teacher Qualifications

Teaching children is a very challenging and demanding job. In order for a teacher to be deemed professionally competent to be able to cope with all aspects of educating children, they have to undergo many years of training.

Qualified Teacher Status

The coveted 'Qualified Teacher Status' or country equivalent is mandatory for any teacher wishing to teach at ISS from Primary level and upwards (age 5). A Bachelor of Education (B Ed) is awarded after a 3 or 4 year study period at University level. A Post Graduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) requires a University degree followed by a minimum of one year's specialist teacher training with an accredited institution. This training is exhaustive and covers all aspects of a child's educational needs and requirements.

TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language)

The TEFL qualification is primarily aimed at qualifying individuals to teach ENGLISH to both adults and children as a FOREIGN language. It is not aimed at qualifying individuals to teach children in a full-time academic role. The course usually takes one to two months of studying and previous academic qualification requirements vary according to the provider.
