Senior School Project: Samui Elephant Haven

Friday 31st August 2018:

The Senior Students from the International School of Samui – under the leadership of Mrs Lopez – began their 8 week project at the newly opened Samui Elephant Haven on Koh Samui. Khun Wittaya and his family have, with the support of well known animal activist Saengduean Lek Chailert (founder of ENP https://www.elephantnaturepark.org/# ), endeavoured to open partnering sanctuaries here on Koh Samui: and they are making strides with the Samui Elephant Sanctuary and Samui Elephant Haven (https://www.samuielephantsanctuary.org/about).

Samui Elephant Haven has begun to provide ISS Senior students with the fantastic and illuminating opportunity to learn first-hand about the lives of elephants – who used to be slaves to their handlers, making other people money at the expense of their freedom.

Currently, Samui Elephant Haven has proudly given Sri Nin, Nong Pech and Moloair, a life out of shackles

and freedom away from slave labour. Each of these three elephants has their own story to tell; going through pain, turmoil and isolation, but are now are under the care of this heartfelt foundation.

Well taken care of, with Sri Nin as the oldest – at approximately 60 years of age – she stands as the matriarch, with the two youngsters remaining playful and happy by her side. Their interaction is just beautiful to watch.
